What is a job application / cover letter?

A job application letter — commonly called a cover letter — is the short letter you send alongside your CV when applying for a job. Where the CV lists what you have done, the cover letter explains why you are a strong fit for this particular role and company, in your own voice. A focused, well-structured cover letter is often what persuades a recruiter to actually open your CV, which is why it remains a standard part of applications in the UAE, Pakistan and across the Gulf.

When do you need one?

You need a job application letter whenever you apply for a position — through a company's careers page, by email, on a job portal, or in response to an advertised vacancy. Many employers explicitly ask for a cover letter, and even when they don't, a tailored one helps you stand out from applicants who send only a CV. It is especially useful when you are changing industries, have a gap to explain, or are applying speculatively, because it lets you connect your experience directly to what the employer is looking for.

Format & what to include

Keep a cover letter to one page and three or four short paragraphs. Open with your contact details and the date, then address it to the hiring manager by name where possible. State the role you are applying for (and any reference number) in the first line. Use the body to highlight the experience, qualifications and key strengths most relevant to the role, ideally backed by one concrete achievement with a result. Add a brief, genuine line on why you want to work for this specific company, mention your availability or notice period, and refer to your attached CV. Close politely and sign off with your name and contact details. Tailor it to each role rather than sending a generic letter.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a cover letter and a job application letter?

They refer to the same thing — a letter that accompanies your CV to introduce yourself and make the case for a specific role. 'Cover letter' is the more common term internationally; 'job application letter' is often used in South Asia. The structure and purpose are identical.

How long should a cover letter be?

One page, no more. Aim for three to four short paragraphs that get to the point quickly. Recruiters skim, so lead with the role you want and your strongest, most relevant selling points rather than a long life story.

Should I tailor the letter to each job?

Yes. A letter that names the company, references the specific role, and connects your skills to what that employer needs is far more effective than a generic one. Update the position, strengths and the 'why this company' line for each application.

Do I still need a cover letter if I'm applying through a portal?

Often yes — many portals have a field to paste or attach one, and including a strong letter signals genuine interest. Even a concise version pasted into an email body is better than none, and helps your application stand out.
