What is a affidavit?
An affidavit is a written statement of facts that the person making it (the deponent) swears or affirms to be true. It is used across Pakistan and the UAE for all kinds of declarations — confirming a name change, declaring an address, stating a fact for a government office, or supporting a court or administrative matter. Because it is a sworn statement, making a false affidavit is a serious offence, so the facts in it must be accurate.
When do you need one?
You'll need an affidavit whenever an authority asks for a sworn declaration rather than a simple statement — for example, to declare that two differently-spelled names refer to the same person, to confirm you are unmarried, to declare loss of a document, or to state ownership or residence. In Pakistan, affidavits are typically executed on judicial stamp paper of the required value and attested by an oath commissioner or notary public; in the UAE, declarations are often notarised. Always confirm the format and stamp value your specific authority requires.
Format & what to include
An affidavit is headed 'AFFIDAVIT' and identifies the deponent by full name, father's/husband's name, ID number and address. It then sets out the sworn statements, usually as clear numbered or separated points beginning with 'That…'. It ends with a declaration that the contents are true and correct and a verification clause stating the place and date of verification, followed by the deponent's signature. For official use it is printed on stamp paper and attested by an oath commissioner or notary.
Frequently asked questions
Does an affidavit need to be on stamp paper?+
In Pakistan, affidavits for official use are normally executed on judicial stamp paper of the required value and attested by an oath commissioner or notary public. This tool produces the text; you then print it on the appropriate stamp paper and have it attested. Confirm the required stamp value with your local authority.
Who can attest an affidavit?+
In Pakistan, an oath commissioner or notary public typically attests affidavits. In the UAE, declarations are usually notarised through a notary public. The attesting officer confirms your identity and that you have sworn to the contents.
What happens if an affidavit is false?+
An affidavit is a sworn statement, so knowingly including false facts is a punishable offence. Only state facts you know to be true, and keep each statement clear and specific.
Can I use this for a name-change affidavit?+
Yes. Set the purpose to your declaration and write the statements clearly — for example, that your name was recorded differently across documents and that both refer to the same person. Then print on stamp paper and have it attested.
