What is a experience letter?
An experience letter — also called an employment certificate or work experience certificate — is an official letter from an employer confirming that a person worked for the company, in what role, and for how long. It is one of the most important documents an employee collects when leaving a job, because future employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies use it as proof of verified work history. In the UAE and Pakistan it is typically issued on company letterhead, signed by HR, and addressed 'To Whom It May Concern'.
When do you need one?
You will need an experience letter when applying for a new job (most employers ask for letters from previous employers), when applying for a skilled-worker or residence visa abroad, when claiming end-of-service benefits, or when seeking membership of a professional body that requires proof of experience. For visa applications in particular, the letter must clearly state your job title, the exact dates of employment and the company's contact details so the consulate can verify it. A current employee may also request an experience letter mid-employment to show continuity of service.
Format & what to include
A standard experience letter is a concise one-page document. It opens with the company reference and date, then certifies the employee's full name, designation and department, the date they joined, and — for someone who has left — the last working day. Many employers add a short line describing the employee's main responsibilities and a sentence confirming that their conduct and performance were satisfactory. It closes with good wishes (for a departing employee), the statement that it was issued on request, and the signature, name and designation of an authorised company representative. Keep it factual: experience letters should avoid subjective praise that could later be disputed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an experience letter and a relieving letter?+
An experience letter certifies your role and tenure and can be issued during or after employment. A relieving letter is issued only when you leave and formally confirms your last working day and that you have been released from your duties. Many companies combine both into a single document on the final day.
Can a current employee ask for an experience letter?+
Yes. Turn on 'Employee is still working with us' in the form and the letter will state that you are currently employed, which is useful for visa applications, loans or background checks while you remain in the job.
Should an experience letter mention salary?+
Not usually. An experience letter focuses on your role and dates of service. If you need your salary certified, use a separate salary certificate, which is the document banks and embassies expect for income proof.
Does the experience letter need a company stamp?+
For it to be accepted by most employers and authorities, yes — it should be printed on company letterhead, signed by an authorised person and stamped with the company seal. This tool produces the wording; your employer adds the letterhead, signature and stamp.
