What is a school leaving certificate?
A school leaving certificate (SLC) — sometimes called a transfer certificate (TC) — is an official document a school issues to a student who is leaving the institution. It confirms that the student studied at the school, records key details such as the class last attended, date of birth and conduct, and states that the student has left and is free to join another school. In Pakistan it is one of the most commonly requested school documents, as the next institution almost always asks for it at admission.
When do you need one?
You need a school leaving certificate whenever a student moves from one school to another, completes their studies, or relocates to a new city or country. The new school requires it to admit the student and to verify their previous class and records; education boards and some government processes may also ask for it. Parents often request it during family transfers or when shifting between systems. Because it doubles as a date-of-birth record in many cases, it is sometimes used for other official purposes too.
Format & what to include
A school leaving certificate is issued on the school's letterhead with its name, address and a serial number. It states the student's full name and father's/guardian's name, registration or roll number, date of birth (often in words as well as figures), nationality, the class last studied, the date of admission and the date of leaving, the reason for leaving, the student's conduct, and confirmation that all dues are cleared with no objection to joining another school. It closes with the signature of the principal or head, their designation, and the official school stamp. Always have it signed and stamped before issuing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a school leaving certificate and a transfer certificate?
They are largely the same document and the terms are often used interchangeably. A 'transfer certificate' emphasises moving to another school, while a 'school leaving certificate' is the broader term. Either way it records that the student has left and is free to be admitted elsewhere.
Why is the date of birth written in words?
Writing the date of birth in words alongside figures reduces the chance of tampering or misreading, since the leaving certificate is often used to confirm a student's age for admission to the next school or board examinations.
Does the certificate need a school stamp?
Yes. To be accepted by another school or an education board, the certificate must be signed by the principal or head and bear the official school stamp. An unsigned, unstamped certificate is generally not accepted.
Can a school refuse to issue it over unpaid fees?
Schools commonly issue the certificate only after outstanding dues are cleared, which is why it usually confirms that no dues remain. Policies vary, so settle any pending fees before requesting the certificate to avoid delays.
