What is a payslip?

A payslip — also called a salary slip or pay stub — is a document an employer gives an employee each pay period that breaks down their pay. It lists the earnings (basic salary plus allowances), the deductions (tax, provident fund, loans), and the resulting net pay actually received. For employees in the UAE and Pakistan, a payslip is the standard proof of income and a key record for loans, visas, rentals and personal budgeting.

When do you need one?

Employers issue a payslip every time salary is paid — usually monthly. Employees rely on it as proof of income when applying for a bank loan or credit card, renting a home, or supporting a visa application, and to check that their salary, allowances and deductions are correct. For employers, issuing clear payslips is good practice and, in many workplaces, expected — it reduces payroll disputes and gives both sides a dated record of exactly what was paid and why.

Format & what to include

A payslip is issued on company letterhead and identifies the pay period and pay date, the employee (name, ID, designation, department) and often their bank account. The body itemises earnings — basic salary and each allowance with its amount — to give the gross, then subtracts total deductions to show the net pay, ideally stated in words as well as figures. Many payslips note that they are computer-generated. Keep the components consistent month to month so employees can compare and verify their pay easily.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a payslip and a salary certificate?

A payslip breaks down one pay period's earnings, deductions and net pay, and is issued every month. A salary certificate is a one-off letter confirming an employee's salary and employment, usually for a specific purpose like a visa or loan. Banks often ask for both.

Should the net pay be written in words?

Yes — writing the net pay in both figures and words removes any doubt about the amount paid, the same convention used on salary certificates and cheques. This generator does it automatically.

How do I show multiple deductions?

Enter the combined total of all deductions (tax, provident fund, loan repayments, etc.) in the deductions field; the payslip subtracts it from gross earnings to show the net pay. List the breakdown in the notes if you want it itemised.

Is a payslip valid without a signature?

Computer-generated payslips are widely accepted without a signature, and this one says so. If your organisation prefers, you can add an authorised signatory, and you can also apply your company stamp using the branding options.
