If you've applied for a personal loan or credit card at a UAE bank, you've probably been asked for a 'salary transfer letter'. It trips people up because it sounds like a salary certificate — but it's a different document with a specific job. Here's what it is and why the bank needs it.

What a salary transfer letter is

It's a letter from your employer to a specific bank confirming that your monthly salary is paid into an account at that bank — and, crucially, an undertaking that the company will keep transferring it there. It's addressed to the bank by name, not written generically.

Why UAE banks require it

Unsecured lending in the UAE is largely secured against your incoming salary. Before approving a loan or credit card, the bank wants your employer's written commitment to keep paying your salary into the account — and to notify the bank and route any end-of-service settlement through them if you leave. That undertaking is what reduces the bank's risk.

Salary certificate vs salary transfer letter

• A salary certificate confirms your employment and income, addressed generically — used for visas, embassies and general proof.
• A salary transfer letter is addressed to a named bank and adds the commitment to keep transferring your salary there — used to approve loans and cards.

What it should contain

• Addressed to the manager of the specific bank and branch
• Your name, ID number, designation and joining date
• Your monthly salary and the account/IBAN it's paid to
• An undertaking to continue transferring the salary to that account

• Authorised signatory's name, designation, signature and company stamp
